A new Formula Drift champion is crowned!\
It's Michael Essa!
For those of who don't know, Michael Essa is a privateer, who unlike other front runners doesn't have any major support from any tire or car manufactures. Coming into the year he had never sat on a podium and was running an all new car, a E46 M3 prepped by his own tuning shop, GSR.
Anyway, Essa ended up get 2 1st's and came into the final round leading Chris Forsberg. He qualified 1st. However, disaster struck during the top 32. Essa advanced, but ended up blowing his engine up in the process. Forsberg need to get 2nd or higher to claim the championship. To quote Murry Walker, "you can cut the tension with a cricket stump". Eventually Forsberg succumbed to Diago Saito in the great eight, giving Essa the championship.
I'm ecstatic to say the least. Everyone wanted Essa to win, the guy has the consistently Tommi Mäkinen and the explosiveness and raw talent of Colin McRae. He constantly displays an insane amount of angle while still maintaing speed and consistency. I wouldn't mind seeing him win a couple more championships.
